Hawkley House
A tired narrow old Edwardian house stuck in the corner of the site was transformed into a lovely family home spread across the plot. I worked closely with the developer/builder who used quality materials and installed timber windows. Gaining planning consent was a challenge especially given the proximity of the mature oak tree.
Detached Victorian House in Osterley
A substantial single storey extension was added to be very much in keeping with the style & character of the property, & was designed so as not to dominate the house whilst maintaining light to the original part of the house through rooflights (not visible). All windows and doors were custom made in timber, with the guttering & rain water pipes being authentically fabricated in cast iron.
Detached House Cobham
This endlessly (rather poorly) extended house was transformed and given back some character and balance with the addition of two roof gables enabling some lovely loft accommodation.
Semaphore House, Claygate
This, one of the original Semaphore Towers forming a line between Portsmouth & London & a Listed Building, was saved from dereliction and added to some 40 years ago. The layout did not really work as a family home, so it was extended/re-designed with the approval of the Local Authority Conservation Officer to enhance its facilities whilst keeping its character & style intact.
Mead House, Walton on Thames
A detached 30's house which had been previously badly modernised, was extensively added to & re-modelled with a new attic roof structure, tile hanging & timber windows all with an Arts & Crafts flavour. Not a uPVC window in sight!
1930's Detached House, Walton on Thames
This classic period house was extended at ground & first floor levels with the roof carried over and converted to give two additional bedrooms & a bathroom in the loft space. Beautiful clay tiles and heritage windows ensured a quality build.
The Old Slaughterhouse, Haslemere
This old slaughterhouse was built some 100 years ago for the local small holdings, and was part of a Listed Property. It had since been converted into a garage & store, and so long as the extension (timber clad) was made to look like a very obvious addition and the character of the old was preserved, the Local Authority allowed the building's conversion into a retirement unit for the owners. It was highly insulated and proved a good example of putting an old fairly redundant building back to work again.
New Build Three Storey House, Walton on Thames
This timber framed substantial house was designed for a carpenter builder as his family home in an Edwardian style. A great deal of thought was given to the detailing such as the roof overhangs, use of materials, bond of the brickwork, the fine staircase, the use of creasing tiles, & the hexagonal chimney stack to name but a few. The purpose made timber joinery windows & doors enhance the period feel, & the building fits well into its semi-rural setting & mature plot.
4 Sassoon Cottages
This neglected cottage had been poorly extended and was crying out for some attention. The Local Authority insisted on maintaining a parking space so the extension was compromised, but nevertheless, with the side extension & a single storey rear kitchen extension the result was a charming and comfortable period home. The workmanship & detailing by the builder was first class.
Detached Victorian House, Hersham
This house was extended to its limit over the years with three separate projects, yet it didn't have the feel of being over extended or over developed. The work included a loft conversion with sympathetic dormers, a two storey rear extension with further roof accommodation, & single storey side & rear extensions. Timber sash windows, french doors & a timber roof lantern were specially commissioned.

This is the sort of extension many would love to build if they had the cash and the land - it over doubled the floor area and made for a spacious, comfortable home.
Old Lodge House, Headley
This characterful old lodge house was a wreck but set in a very generous plot. Many of the walls were built from dusty cob & had to be re-instated. It was a labour of love & gaining planning permission was a challenge, but the result was a restored & renovated family home.
Detached Triple Aspect House on the River Ember
This beautiful Edwardian house had been largely untouched save the addition of a small conservatory. The kitchen was modest, so a 'wrap around' extension was built and internal walls removed to give a larger kitchen & dining area as well as a utility & downstairs w.c.
A couple of years later, the owners went on to replace the rather ugly side bay with a custom made timber curved bay (bottom four photos.) which opened up the sitting room to give panaromic views and a offered a special place to sit & relax.

This was not a project for the faint-hearted! The property had been in the hands of a 'builder' who had bolted on extensions to make a quick buck, so there was alot of undoing and putting right, as well as re-designing the layout. It was worth the effort though, with the owners accomplishing a satisfying re-modelling & renovation.

This detached house did not lend itself to being extended to the side because of the roof shape and lack of space - it was deemed by the planners to be blocking the light to a neighbouring house to the right & rear. In frustration, the owner called up the planning officer and burst into tears. The planning officer, who was known as a hard man, softened on this occasion & offered that if she could get a letter from the neighbours saying that they had no objection onto his desk by 12pm the next day he would recommend the application for approval. It was duly approved.
The owners created a seamless extension giving more space including a garage, whilst gaining a comfortable loft bedroom that is not visible from the front.
Semi-detached House, Guildford
Barely 1.0m wide & built over a 1.6m deep sewer, this was a very challenging extension to design & build, but it gained an entrance hall downstairs & a shower room upstairs & transformed the house completely.

With an interesting history - part of a 1920's house extended in the 1930's then split & further extended in the 1970's - the layout of the accommodation was unbalanced & awkward. The owners wanted to create a more workable family home. So with a kitchen extension, the addition of a study & utility room, together with a re-modelling/extending of the upstairs with new bedrooms & en suites, a balanced, comfortable, spacious property was achieved. The owners were very keen to maintain the character/style of the property & fitted beautiful custom made timber windows, an impressive front entrance door & a bespoke porch.

This modest cottage was sympathetically extended to the side & rear to give an open plan kitchen/living space as well as a master en suite bedroom.
'The Green Hut', Pirbright
Built as replacement to a hastily built wartime Parish Council meeting/operations hut which had been demolished as an unsafe structure, attention to detail from the project manager/contractor resulted in a very pleasing & functional office/meeting room complete with disabled w.c.
Detached Edwardian Riverside Property, East Molesey
This uncared for period house was lovingly restored & extended by the owners who spared no effort in creating a beautiful home, a legacy for many years to come. It was featured on the tv show, Location, Location.
New Build Detached House with Attached Swimming Pool Room, Hersham
Following the demolition of a leaky old flat roofed bungalow set on a mature plot, & a Bat Survey & planning tussle later, this solid brick house with swimming pool was erected in a traditional style externally with beautiful timber windows, whilst internally it was styled in a more contemporary manner.
Replacement Shop Front, St Margaret's
Excuse the photos. but you get the gist! This characterless shop front had been installed after the original shop front had been ripped out in the 1970's. Whilst we did not have photos. of the original, a traditionally styled shop front was designed & reinstated, benefitting from a Local Authority Grant (those were the days!). I was delighted to be notified that I was the winner of a Conservation & Design Award from The London Borough of Richmond.
Another Traditional Shop Front, Teddington
Again this rather grim grey aluminium shop front was replaced with a traditional one, much as would have been the original. I won a Commendation in the same category for this design.
New Build Riverside Chalet Bungalow, Shepperton
An old shack was demolished to make way for this traditionally styled chalet bungalow. The Local Authority were resistant to any substantive form of development, so the owners had to battle to achieve this comfortable home which was built elevated up from the ground to give a flood void beneath.
